Going back to Europe

I am going to sail Harmattan back to Europe. I have less than three months to complete the voyage and the hurricane season is about to start, so no time to waste.

From red to blue before 10am

Never leave on a long voyage without a decent amount of Knakworsten!

Curacao Marine 28th May 2016: ready to go!

The’ warming up’ trip from Curacao to Bonaire

Back at my old spot on
 Bonaire

Bonaire - Bermuda

Tuesday 31 May, departing from Bonaire. It feels strange to leave this place behind. In fact, going back to Europe feels almost unnatural – why would one leave crystal blue waters, sunny weather and steady trades and head for the cold and unsettled weather? Anyway, I will be back, one day I will be back.. Photo by sy Eastbirds

My first catch after a few hours at sea: a Yellow Fin tuna, exactly the size of my cool box!

After 3 days we reach the east end of Puerto Rico and pass through the Virgin Passage after which we set  course due North to Bermuda - which is still 900 Miles away

The last 48 hours we experience the tail of the named storm ‘Colin’. A pitch dark night with strong winds, followed by a full morning of torrential rain

I constantly have this old Fleedwood Mac song in my head with a slightly different chorus line:  You can go the wrong way, you can go the wrong way..”

With a last push from the engine, we reach Saint George, Bermuda just before sunset, exactly 10 days after our departure from Bonaire

Bermuda

Bermuda - Up in the mast to fix a small problem – this used to be a fun thing to do for me when I was around 14 years old. Nowadays, I’m reaching the limits of my comfort zone somewhere around the second spreaders
